More than 50 fuzzy, happily yipping, rescued dogs are ready for adoption at the Tri-County Animal Shelter in Boca Raton, after arriving in South Florida Wednesday morning.

The shelter is open for adoptions Tuesday - Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Tri-County Humane Society is located at 21287 Boca Rio Road in Boca Raton. Call (561) 482-8110 for adoption information.

Two weeks ago, the scene was grim: 141 dogs and one cat were discovered during a traffic stop near Memphis, Tenn. Police said they were crammed in the back of a U-Haul truck and appeared to be sick and starving.

The women driving the U-Haul were arrested. The women stated they were with an animal rescue group called "Hearts for Hounds" and were transporting the animals from Long Beach, Calif., to Virginia for an adoption event.

Soon, volunteers began taking care of the animals.

“We were called in and asked to do the emergency sheltering in Memphis after they were taken off the truck,” said Tracy Reis with the American Humane Association.

Reis and a group of veterinarians bathed and cared for the animals. Almost miraculously, none had to be euthanized.

Eventually, some animals were transferred to organizations in Tennessee, while 47 others made the two-hour flight on a donated Fed Ex plane to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

“Even though all our cargo is precious -- look at that face. You can't argue with that,” said a Fed Ex employee.

“They are completely different now. They want to be cuddled and held and they're just doing wonderful,” Reis said.

After arriving at the Fed Ex cargo terminal, the dogs had another journey: to the Tri-County Humane Society in Boca Raton where they will live until they get a permanent home.

Employees greeted their newest tenants with stuffed animals and blankets. The first dogs could be available for adoption as early as Thursday.

“I know they're going to be in wonderful hands,” Reis said.
